DR MOCHTAR RIADY Lippo Group – Founder and Chairman: Mochtar Riady, 85, is a Chinese Indonesian business magnate, investor, veteran banker and philanthropist. Born in Malang, East Java in 1929, Mochtar started out in the business world as a proprietor of a bicycle shop at the age of 22. He has long been one of Indonesia’s most respected patriarchs. Mochtar is widely acknowledged as a master in turning around the fortunes of financial institutions, making his mark in creating the country’s top banks – Bank Central Asia and Panin Bank – and the Lippo Group, which he established in 1950. Today, Mochtar devotes most of his time to his philanthropic activities. His education foundation manages 52 schools and two universities, including Indonesia’s leading private university UPH (Universitas Pelita Harapan), as ranked by QS World University Rankings. Committed to the pursuit of innovative research in cancer, Mochtar set up the Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology Research in 2006. In 2005, Mochtar received an Honorary Doctor from the Southeast University (formerly Chung Yang University), Nanjing; and he is a Visiting Professor of Xiamen University, Fujian Province. He was a member of the board of Trustees at Universitas Indonesia and at the University of Southern California. Mochtar also generously contributed to NUS Business School and its flagship building named Mochtar Riady Building. Mochtar is married to May Riady, and has six children, 22 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys Chinese Calligraphy.
