- The world is looking forward to a fruitful COP 28 to bring back to track the 1.5 °C-aligned energy transition and emission reduction. Multiple choices of decarbonization pathways include increasing self-awareness by acting entities, administrative planning by governments, and leveraging market incentives. Of these, market mechanisms and carbon pricing are essential going forward in allocating resources and guiding micro-economic activities. A wave of national carbon emission and carbon credits trading schemes is surging across Asia, in particular in large developing economies including China, India and Indonesia. What is more, carbon offsets derived from nature-based solutions provide an avenue for businesses and other non-governmental organizations to combat carbon emissions, going beyond merely decarbonizing their operational footprints, thereby bolstering global endeavors for a net-zero shift and sustainable growth.
This round table intends to trigger candid and in-depth discussions among top decision makers, industry experts, market players, and academia on the current status, challenges and way-outs of the Net Zeroing path based on market mechanism and carbon markets, in particular how to enhance connectivity among the markets, scale up investment in nature-based solutions through carbon offsets, and achieve synergies with the Paris Agreement objectives.
